Pakistan Floods – a disaster that goes from bad to worse Header > The worst floods in the history of Pakistan

Facts & Figures as of 12 August 2010

13.8 million people are affected – that is almost one in every 10 Pakistanis. The floods have affected more than 70 per cent of the country – an area equivalent to the size of the UK.

The monsoon season could last for at least another month, worsening the flooding we have seen so far, and affecting new areas particularly in the south.

At least 6 million people will need emergency assistance in the weeks and months ahead. The immediate priorities are food, clean drinking water, tents and other shelter and non-food items, and medical assistance.

The Red Cross Red Crescent is planning to scale up its response five-fold. The massive humanitarian needs require a greater response than originally anticipated. Recovery needs are likely to extend up to 2012.

Due to the massive needs, the Pakistan Red Crescent (PRCS) emergency is looking to increase its relief distribution plan from 50,000 (350,000 people) to 300,000 families (2,100,00 people). The IFRC and ICRC plan to support the PRCS plan over the next six to nine months (150,000 families – 1,050,000 people with support from IFRC, 150,000 families with support from ICRC).

Since 21 July, the Pakistan Red Crescent with support from Movement partners has distributed relief to over 250,000 people across seven provinces. PRCS medical teams have reached over 30,000 individuals.
