A Flashback of Flag Day 2011

Here are some notable quotes from volunteers and donors on volunteering or donating at our previous Flag Day 2011, on 7 September 2011.

Quotes from Volunteers

“The greatest satisfaction is to see how kind people are. They have the initiative to donate. It is very meaningful to volunteer for Flag Day. I feel quite happy because I can help the less fortunate. Sometimes, I picture myself as a less fortunate person, I would be happy to know that I am being helped,” Darrell Lim, 17, Singapore Polytechnic.

“Flag Day is very fun. One can see many kind Singaporeans. They come forward to donate without being asked. Some donated quite a big sum of money,” Lim Qing Rui.

“It is very meaningful. I feel happy because many people are so kind. When people ignore us, it is very disappointing. But we persevere because we are helping the disabled. When we bring the tins back to the Red Cross headquarters, the management is very happy and they say thank you to us. I will volunteer for this again. As it benefits the needy, all our obstacles are worthwhile,” Xin Lu.

“The biggest challenge is when people ignore you. You feel disappointed and discouraged. When my tin is full, I have much satisfaction. I will volunteer again because it is fun and I can do a good deed,” Wong Wei Foong.

Quotes from Donors

“I like helping others. Every dollar makes a difference. By contributing, I give the less fortunate a chance to build up their confidence, with the support of the public. I would definitely motivate others to donate too. What comes around goes around.” Mr Ramp Mashood, 39.

“It’s for a good cause. Monetary contribution indicates that people out there still cares. I am more impressed by volunteers who put in the time to help others. My contribution is nothing,” Mr Gan Boon Seng, 50.

Reflections of Interviewer, Patricia Alvina

I was impressed by a guy’s compassion to others. He has physical mobility problem, due to calcium deficiency. But it has not stopped him from donating to Singapore Red Cross.

Another construction worker who donated was happy to do his part.

Most of the donors are very shy people. They just want to do their part in the world and not be announced to the world.

For the volunteers, you can see the change in their confidence, from standing straight in the crowd and smiling for the cause to running away from the camera. Sometimes in life, you need to have the courage to step up, be noticed and get forward.

What are you waiting for! Contribute generously to our local humanitarian efforts at our Flag Day 2012 on 11 February!

Proceeds will go towards providing long-term residential care to the residents of our Red Cross Home for the Disabled, subsidising the transportation of needy to and from their medical appointments via the Red Cross Non-Emergency Ambulance Service and subsidizing the first aid courses at our Red Cross Training Centre.
