Dear All,

As we celebrate the World Red Cross Day on 8 May 2010, here is the WRCD Message from the Chairman of the Singapore Red Cross Society, Mr Tee Tua Ba.

---

WORLD RED CROSS DAY 2010
8 May 2010

MESSAGE FROM MR TEE TUA BA
CHAIRMAN, SINGAPORE RED CROSS SOCIETY

Dear Principals, Teachers, Red Cross Youth Officers, Red Cross Youth Members and students,

1 Today, we are gathered to commemorate the founding of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the world's largest humanitarian network with over 100 million volunteers and members. 8th May marks the birth date of Henry Dunant, a Swiss national who, after his experiences during the Battle of Solferino in 1859, advocated for the humane treatment of the sick and wounded during wartime. In memory of his action for humanity, this day has been set aside to honour all those who contribute to ongoing efforts to relieve human suffering.

2 Simple acts of kindness continue to transform lives. Disasters, displacement, diseases, poverty and food shortages are just some challenges faced by millions affected by armed conflict, natural catastrophes, internal violence and climate change. To improve the lives of vulnerable people around the globe, we have to mobilise the power of humanity. We must continue the work of giving assistance and comfort to the needy. We must ensure our communities are more ready and resilient in the face of disasters, and we must embrace our shared duty to better prepare ourselves against emergencies, both big and small.

3 The Singapore Red Cross is one of 186 Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies around the world. Our work is based on the fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality and our mission is three-pronged: to protect human life and dignity, relieve human suffering and respond to emergencies.

4 In times of disasters, we work alongside governments, welfare organisations and survivors to offer immediate relief aid. As with the Philippines Tropical Storm and the Earthquakes in Padang, Haiti and Chile, we translate the monetary contributions from Singaporeans and foreigners to medical aid, water purification systems and food rations for the survivors, and later on, to rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. In bandaging the wounded and treating the sick, we hope to relieve suffering. In restoring family links, we hope to unite and strengthen families which were separated. In rebuilding villages and communities, we hope to restore a sense of belonging and ownership.

5 We join hands and extend help to the vulnerable in our community through our local humanitarian efforts and services. The work of Singapore Red Cross encompasses the promotion of the Movement’s humanitarian values, fostering partnerships and enhancing volunteerism, disaster preparedness, disaster response and healthcare for the community.

6 Our staff, members and volunteers participate in national and civil emergency exercises in disaster preparedness, train adult volunteers in disaster management, and provide first aid and life support services and training to the public. We also care for the severely disabled at the Red Cross Home for the Disabled, provide ambulance services to those in need and recruit blood donors to help save lives.

7 Our work is really about engaging people in the spirit of volunteerism and empowering everyone to make a difference in the world around us. For it is only when everyone in our community takes action to better prepare themselves to cope with the current and emerging crises, that together we can protect our way of life.

8 The Red Cross Youth is an integral part of the Red Cross Movement in Singapore. Through their involvement in local community projects, our youths develop the Red Cross way of life – one that defines their characters, enriches their personal lives and makes for a holistic educational experience. Our training programme complements the different stages of youth development and offers plentiful opportunities for our youths to develop their interpersonal and leadership skills, to prepare them for greater roles which they will assume in the future.

9 Last year, our youths did us proud with their compassion and service to our community. Together with the adult volunteers, they organised “First Aiders on Wheels” and provided first aid coverage to the injured at the East Coast Park every Sunday and on Public Holidays. They participated actively in Project R.I.C.E and collected grains of love for low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled. Under Project Red Cross Love, they put together a day of fun, interactive activities and goodies for the elderly.

10 Let us come together to celebrate the spirit of generosity. May the dedicated individuals and organisations continue to keep that spirit alive. I encourage you to observe this weekend with activities to make the world a better place for the vulnerable and by supporting the work of Singapore Red Cross and Red Cross Youth.

11 On this note, I would like to express my gratitude to the Ministry of Education, principals, teachers, youth officers and volunteers for your unstinting support in encouraging, inspiring and promoting the growth of Red Cross as a uniformed group in our schools. We value this close collaboration and cooperation.

12 Lastly, I would like to wish all Red Cross Youth members a meaningful World Red Cross Day. May you continue to live your motto: “Serve One Another” and bring the world “Together For Humanity”.

Thank you.

---

Here's wishing everyone a happy World Red Cross Day!
